PCE beat off competition from fellow finalists Crowdcube and Simpleware to collect the award at a glittering ceremony attended by 300 local businessmen and women at Sandy Park in Exeter on Friday, April 27. PCE had submitted an entry based on a profitable year that had seen the Sowton-based radio experts grow contracts with existing customers while securing new deals, including digital radio solutions for Stagecoach South West and Torbay Hospital. In addition, PCE demonstrated its use of new products, such as lone worker and vehicle tracking systems, to delve into new markets while developing a new product of its own, an electronic control module called Rite-In to operate rampsand lifts in disabled wheelchair accessible vehicles, to illustrate its innovative flair and engineering expertise. PCE’s managing director Karen Langley said: “We were so proud to win this award. I believe it is testament to the collective hard work and talent of our small but perfectly formed team that has enabled us to survive and thrive in the current economic climate and to obviously catch the eye of the award judges.” Mrs Langley added: “The awards evening was not only thoroughly enjoyable but was also a clear illustration of the quality of business expertise and innovative talent that exists in Exeter and Devon. It would be great to see these businesses and others use their success to employ more local people and to reinvest their money in South West to ensure our local economy can continue to flourish.” One of the judges, Pete Tomlinson from Eclipse Internet, said: "This is a small business that's making a big difference to some of the largest public and private sector organisations in the area."Through helping them communicate more effectively, they are growing by helping them to succeed." Sowton-based in-vehicle and digital radio experts PCE sponsored Slade for the 2011/12 season and Managing Director and West Hill school governor Karen Langley donated the player appearance, which is included in the sponsorship package, to the school. The result was an afternoon of rugby training led by the promising England U20 fly-half for year five pupils from the school in Ottery St Mary, Devon. Mrs Langley said: “We decided the school would benefit a lot more from a coaching session than us using Henry for a commercial purpose. The children all seemed to enjoy the session and Henry was a credit to Exeter Chiefs in the way he delivered the session.” For more on this story, please see: Express & Echo carolinemoore@pce-exeter.co.uk (Caroline Moore) Fri, 27 Apr 2012 10:21:41 +0000 PCE develops new product to ease access into wheelchair accessible vehicles http://pce-exeter.com/news/pce-develops-new-product-to-ease-access-into-wheelchair-accessible-vehicles/ PCE’s engineers have developed Rite-In as a revolutionary new electronic control module to be used within the disabled wheelchair accessible vehicle market in place of unreliable hydraulic systems that do not operate in cold weather. Rite-In enables the opening of vehicle doors and the deployment of passenger tail-lifts or ramps on an automated and remote controlled basis to allow access to the vehicle. It is activated using a simple key fob that connects to the control module. Rite-In has been programmed to ensure the whole process of accessing vehicles designed for wheelchair users is a much swifter and smoother process. A hydraulic system may take around 25 seconds to open and 30 seconds to close. Rite-In takes 15 seconds for the completion of both functions. More importantly, this electronic control module is not affected by cold weather and is reliable element of a vehicle modified for use by a disabled person. PCE also paid particular attention to the safety aspects of Rite-In. It will not activate if the doors are locked or if the vehicle is moving. Furthermore, Rite-In monitors the current, and hence the force, being used to open or close the door or ramp which stops the motor when it comes under too much load, so stops the motor when it comes into contact with an object or person, and therefore avoiding injury. The Rite-In prototype has won admiration from UK and European disabled mobility experts. Karen Langley, managing director of PCE, said: “We are now in a position to bring Rite-In product to market. We feel we may be on the brink of a revolution in the way disabled people can access and exit their wheelchair accessible vehicles. This is a reliable and safe product that is swifter and easier to use. It may be just one element of a disabled person’s life but if it can guarantee them enhanced independence then it is a worthwhile element.” Call PCE today for more information on Rite-In. carolinemoore@pce-exeter.co.uk (Caroline Moore) Tue, 24 Apr 2012 08:18:48 +0000 PCE supports Devon and Cornwall Police Three Peaks Challenge http://pce-exeter.com/news/pce-supports-devon-and-cornwall-police-three-peaks-challenge/ Premier Communication Electronics (PCE) has helped six policemen from the Devon & Cornwall force stay in touch while they completed the National Three Peaks Challenge. Exeter’s Sergeant Mark Bond and his constabulary colleagues recently scaled the three highest mountain peaks in England, Scotland and Wales within 24 hours to try to raise £4,000 for the Devon Community Foundation. This gruelling challenge saw the team walk to the peaks of Scafell Pike in England, Ben Nevis in Scotland and Snowdon in Wales to climb 11,179 feet in just one day. This tested both their endurance and stamina as they braved the potential extreme weather conditions and steep mountain faces. The team, which was known as ‘Six and a Half Men', was joined by 5ft 6ins Shane Knight, a Tae Kwondo instructor from Mid Devon. PCE, based in Osprey Road on Exeter’s Sowton Industrial Estate, loaned the team three Motorola analogue two-way radios and a fixed mobile as a base unit to enable the team to remain in contact in often challenging conditions. Karen Langley, managing director of PCE, said: “A challenge like this is a perfect example of where radios are more reliable and robust than mobile phones. It is imperative that the members of the team could contact each other and their team on the ground at all times to ensure their safety was protected at all times. There is no room for a loss of signal or a lack of voice quality or battery life when tackling a challenge like this and we were more than happy to support Mark and his team. We congratulate them on their efforts.” Sgt Bond said: "This was a great challenge for all involved but it was made easier knowing that so many people were supporting us.  Devon Community Foundation is Devon's local charity for local people. Through our work across Devon and Cornwall, we are aware of the fantastic support that hundreds of voluntary and community groups on the frontline get from Devon Community Foundation. They help local people in need to build better and more inclusive communities for everyone." Donations can still be made to http://www.justgiving.com/sixandahalfmen. Premier Communication Electronics (PCE) Ltd, based on the Sowton Industrial Estate in Exeter, has recently supplied the new radio system to the Trust’s large general hospital, Torbay Hospital. The Hospital’s staff had been using licence-free radios to accommodate the communications needs of its security, environment, hotel and porter services departments. PCE conducted a site investigation to ascertain whether the use of digital radio would be a more appropriate and efficient form of communication between mobile members of staff and advised the Hospital to invest in a 16-radio Motorola MOTOTRBO solution. Karen Langley, PCE’s Managing Director, said: “By investing in a state-of-the art digital system, the Trust provided a plethora of communications services to these four departments. The members of staff that work for these departments can now talk to each other without being overheard by other departments, thus ensuring the right information is being shared with the right people. More importantly, by choosing digital radios, conversations remain private and cannot be overheard by external parties.” The switch from analogue to digital radio created other immediate benefits for the Trust in that its new handsets provide extended battery life, clearer voice quality and the ability to utilise data sharing applications, such as texting. The in-built lone worker solution was also appealing to the Trust. This feature sounds an alert to each relevant member of the hotel service cleaning team to answer at regular intervals. If a member of staff does not respond to an alert, the radio gives out an emergency alert which is automatically followed by a 20-second interval in which the worker can call out their location and/or their situation. Each radio is programmed with a staff username from the hospital’s contacts lists and during an emergency transmission, the username is automatically sent out to all available users to alert them to potential situation and to help locate the distressed user. Mrs Langley added: “Lone worker solutions are becoming a standard health and safety requirement for many businesses and organisations, and as a result, we have seen an increase in interest for products like these. We are pleased that we have been able to supply with a South Devon Healthcare with an efficient, private and safety-conscious communications solution.” PCE’s team of highly certified engineers not only installed the solution but also provided the training to department managers and supervisors to enable them to pass on further training to their members of staff. The Devon park is on the outskirts of Exeter on a 100-acre site that encompasses 10 theme park rides, three indoor play areas, and numerous outdoor activities, including sandpits and pony paddocks, plus an adjoining campsite. Crealy Great Adventure Park had been using a mix of base stations and handheld analogue radios as its main form of on-site communications. The company that had provided these, however, was not a radio specialist, so when some of the equipment started not performing as well as Crealy wanted it to, the adventure park turned to PCE for advice. FITAS is the industry-recognised accreditation scheme for the installers of electrical communications equipment into vehicles and is presided over by the Federation of Communication Services (FCS). The examinations are overseen and marked by the Mobile Electronics & Security Federation (MESF), which is an association of businesses that markets products and services to enhance the vehicle-owning and driving experience, such as hands-free mobile kits and satellite navigation systems. The repeater was used to boost the signal of the radios to ensure their range was efficient in all areas of the College grounds.Karen Langley, Managing Director for PCE, said: “We realised that radio communication was crucial to Bicton College due to the huge area its estate covers. The College had decided to upgrade its existing system as it was struggling to achieve complete coverage and its staff also wanted to enjoy better voice clarity.“The switch from analogue to digital radio created immediate benefits for the College. Digital radios provide extended battery life, clearer voice quality, the ability to utilise data sharing applications and, above all, security and privacy.”The system installed by PCE’s team of award-winning engineers provided the College with an improved communications system that has also been integrated with its alarm system; in that every time the alarm was activated, an alarm notification is sent via text to the radios too.Furthermore, individual calls can be made using the MOTOTRBO range using its extensive contact list capabilities. This allows for private calls between two users rather than having to broadcast potentially sensitive messages across the entire frequency.Ross Cooper, Campus Manager of Bicton College, said: “Our radios receive a high amount of use for many different reasons and are critical in ensuring student and staff safety, and effective communication throughout the College. We are delighted with the enhanced quality, features and coverage of the new radios and have been really pleased with the service and continued support provided by PCE.” PCE also processed the paperwork to meet the College’s new radio licence requirements and following installation, the College’s staff were trained to use the radios. PCE remains in contact with the College to ensure it is making optimum use of its radio system and to assist with any changes or maintenance issues. PCE provided 36 radios and the antenna and repeaters required to boost the radio signal between the town and Bulverton site. PCE installed the entire solution and provided training to all the radio users. John Radford, managing director of JR Events Services, said: “We needed a complete single communications set-up; we wanted venue-wide communications. The previous time the festival had used radios, it did not work and people were sceptical about using them again. “PCE came up with a solution rather than just giving us a product. Since then, they have gone away and come up with other ideas to move the solution forward again. “I cannot sing PCE’s praises enough.
